About

Our Annual ChemE-Sports™ Competition (est. 2019) is a free, international collegiate competition in which Chemical Engineering students use PetroSkills’ process simulation software  to characterize hazards, troubleshoot upsets and failures in a system, and optimize a system for safety and profitability.

On competition day, students will run 20-minute shifts/rounds on our simulation software while being scored on limiting the number of instruments/controllers to go into alarm, time that instruments/controllers spend in an alarm state, and overall profitability of the unit. Before each round, competitors are given a mission statement which briefs them on constraints and possible changes to the system throughout the 20-minuite period.

Each round, we also plan in unknown upsets/failures that competitors are not made aware of before the start of the round. The teams must troubleshoot these issues as they arise while attempting to keep the unit's products on-spec, run the unit within safety constraints, and optimize the system for efficiency and profitability.

The simulators used in these competitions is the same software used to train incumbent process operators and engineers at major oil and gas companies including members of the PetroSkills Alliance.

Since 2019, ChemE-Sports has hosted  80+ teams from 5 continents.
